Pull up a chair, a pen, a notepad and maybe a web browser; we're about to break down the expected trends for the fall of 2023. Back in March, the runways were graced with big fashion names like Marc Jacobs and Tommy Hilfiger to give a preview of expected fashion trends for autumn and winter 2023. Between the season's hot "it girl" colors and statement pieces you can expect to fill the shelves of your favorite clothing stores, we have you covered on what to look for and what to wear as seen on the runways.
Canadian Tuxedos
Ah yes, unfortunately (or fortunately for some), Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were not the last of this jean-on-jean get-up. While early 2000s stylizations of this kind of fit were…questionable at best, the Canadian Tuxedo is returning to full swing this fall except with darker wash denim and a 70s flair. Building off this returning look is a throwback to the 70s, so pull out your flare jeans and vests to flesh out this aesthetic that will dominate the fall fashion season.
A Pop of Red
Red is simply that girl this fall. Red boots are a must along with red leather jackets, red skirts, turtlenecks and sweaters. You can incorporate this color all the way to sporting a bold, statement red lip. Gone are the days of muted natural tones (well, not entirely) and here are the days of bright cherry, scarlet and maroon. Don’t worry about filling your closet out with red, unless that’s your vibe, all you need is the perfect statement pair of red boots or a jacket that can be worked into any outfit to add a pop of color.
Statement Scarves
When we say statement scarves, we don’t mean the infinity scarf variety. As seen on the runway, embrace scarves bordering on tops or ponchos. Yes, you can also make a swap for a poncho, which will give the same effect. But back to the scarves, think old Hollywood, creating a dramatic exit as you swoop your gargantuan scarf over your shoulder and strut out. Okay, maybe not that dramatic, but you get the point. This season of fall fashion is not for the subtle.
Olive Green
Olive green has had a moment for a minute now, and don’t think it’s slowing down anytime soon. This shade of green will continue to be the name of the game this fall; as it should, it simply looks great on most people. Consider olive green turtlenecks or slacks for a bit more color in your closet. And an olive green leather trench coat? Chef’s kiss, 10/10. Go ahead and add that to your cart now.
Over-the-Knee Boots
These boots were made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do all season long. Except it’s about time to ditch the ankle booties of the 2010s and swap them for some femme fatale over-the-knee boots. You can pair them with tights, mini skirts and dresses or go for a more classic look of a long skirt with a pop of boots at the bottom. They may not be the most functional pair of shoes in your closet, but they’ll be there for when you feel like being fashion-forward and making your presence known.
Butter Yellow
Contrasting the boldness of red this season and the depth of olive green is this mellow, butter yellow. Subdued and delicate, this color will look great in dress pants or turtleneck sweaters. Perfect for creating a splash of sunshine on a dreary fall day, you can pair it easily with classic rain boots or any muted tones you want to spruce up.
Off the Shoulder Tops
Are these tops a go-to for comfort in the crisp fall weather? Absolutely not. BUT they are cute as heck. Save these tops for a sweet date night or a fun peek-a-boo moment at an outing. Another staple for this season that can be impractical but well-suited for the right events. Just make sure you bring a coat to cover up if the weather gets a little nippy.
