1. Check the “Put Back” Rack
What better spot to check than a place where people put back clothing they didn't want? Usually found near the fitting rooms, this rack is a good starting point. When you first walk into the store, all the racks of clothes may look intimidating, so think of it as a small, curated haven of pieces where people put back clothes because they don't fit or they realized it’s not their style. Try it out! Who knows what hidden gems you might find?
2. Don’t Plan
Going into it blind can be fun! It’s also hard to look for a particular item – this is a store filled with unique pieces, so keep an open mind. It’s good to have an idea of what you want but each aisle holds something special. If you have tunnel vision, then you’ll miss out on all the other potential finds.
3. Know When the Store Restocks
Find out when the store restocks with new donations and go there soon after. This way you can see the full selection and find some quality items! Don’t wait too long after because many of these items might be gone by the time you get around to them.
4. Inspect Your Finds Before You Buy
It’s absolutely tragic when you buy something, take it home and then realize there is a stain or a hidden hole you didn't notice at first. Some clothes may be very enticing and you may be blinded by how much you love the piece to not notice the imperfections. That being said, if you do like an item enough, there is nothing wrong with some minor stains that you can remove in the wash or some holes that you can easily sew up. Realizing this ahead of time can help you decide whether to keep an item or put it back.
5. Don’t Skip out on the Belts and Bags
Belts and bags are where you can find some unique, standout pieces. You can find accessories that were customized by the previous owner, some good basics or even something designer. Even buying a statement belt from a thrift store is an easy way to ensure nobody has one similar to it.
6. Don’t Give Up
Give yourself at least 30 minutes of browsing time before you completely give up on a store. Sometimes it’s hard to find things you like, so be patient. Make sure you are looking closely and not just skimming the aisles because sometimes it takes a keen eye to spot the stuff you like. Remember, thrifting takes time, so take your time and persevere!
7. Don't Want to Look in Store?
If you want to avoid going into the store, check out some resell websites like Poshmark, Depop or Mercari. There are websites for thrifting, too, like thredUP and Goodfair. With these sites, you may be a little more successful to find and exact item you want by looking it up. You can also filter through the website’s general selection by using keywords that describe the item you are looking for. Vintage stores are even selling their clothes through Instagram, so be sure to check their social media as well!
