1. For the Wannabe Influencer: the Maldives
If your kid is just in it for the ‘gram (Instagram that is),
they will love this Indian Ocean island chain, one of the most photogenic locations
in the world. Snap a pic with the overwater bungalows suspended over crystal-clear
waters. Don’t miss the stunning sunsets, the beautiful beaches and relaxing
hammocks. Definitely make sure your phone is charged and you have plenty of memory for all the photos you'll be taking.
2. For the Gamer: Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is a gamer’s dream. Shop at the Nintendo Tokyo store
for your favorite Mario merch, eat at the Square Enix Café (created by the
Final Fantasy developer) or hit up a Pokemon Center. Sega Towers holds a
massive arcade center in Akihabara,
also a destination for gaming stores and other arcades. Take the bullet
train to Kyoto to visit the soon-to-be-open
Nintendo Museum.
3. For the Adventure-Seeker: Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a paradise for adrenaline junkies. Start with
a zip line through the rainforest canopy. For watersports, there is white water
rafting, surfing and kayaking. Hike up to a volcano, down into a cave or jump
in the ocean with a snorkel to explore the vibrant marine life. Active teens of
all levels can find fun, safe ways to get their pulse racing (and yours too!).
4. For the Comic Book Nerd: San Diego
If you can’t make it to July’s San Diego Comic-Con, you can
still go to the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park. Around the city, there are also lots of
places to shop for comics and comic merch, including Comickaze Comics, Now or
Never Comics and Yesteryear Comics. Take in some art at a comic book art
gallery. Also, check out a comic-themed café like Altered Ego and maybe join a
meetup for local fans to discuss their favorite comics.
5. For the Music Maven: Austin, Texas
If you snag a ticket for the coveted weekly drawing of Austin
City Limits, consider yourself super lucky. There are also a lot of more family-friendly
options for music appreciation, including brewhouses and farms. Check out the Texas Music Museum, listen
to acoustic sets at 360 Bridge Overlook and catch a free outdoor show at Blues
on the Green. Don’t forget to shop in the record stores and get some barbeque
at the iconic Stubbs.
6. For the Book Worm: Portland
Start at the iconic Powell’s City of Books, the largest independent
bookstore in the world, with many floors featuring new and used books. There are lots of independent shops around the city, too, featuring specialized collections,
book signings, author readings and more. Join a literary walking tour, peep the
Beverly Clearly Sculpture Garden, and find a cozy café to curl up in with a new
book.
7. For the Fashion Icon: Milan Italy
Serious shoppers will love the fashion capital of the world.
Quadrilatero della Moda is the fashion district of the city and definitely a
must-see. There are designer stores to window shop at, discount stores with
famous brands and lots of fashionable people to watch in the streets. Five
different fashion museums will catch you up on the history of fashion and the
brands that made Milan famous.
8. For the Sports Fan: Barcelona
No matter what teams you root for, this sports destination is a must for sports fans. Check out a soccer (football) match at Camp Nou Stadium,
home of the world-famous FC Barcelona. You can also tour the stadium and check
out the museum which tells the history of the team. Pick up some merch at Barça
Store to show your team colors. Barcelona
Olympic Park is open for tours so you can learn more about the site of the 1992
Summer Olympics. If you prefer to be the one doing the sport, try playing beach
volleyball, basketball, and tennis. There are also water sports, cycling, rollerblading and many more things to wear an active teen out.
9. Animals Admirer: Galapagos
Animal encounters take center stage in the beautiful and
wild Galapagos Islands. From sea lions to marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies
to penguins, there’s so much variety in this diverse ecosystem. Snorkel in the
seas, watch birds in the tree tops and kayak around for new animals to view.
The Charles Darwin Research Station will teach you all about local conservation
efforts and you can also spot giant tortoises up close.
10. For the Pop Culture Expert: Los Angeles
You’ll be seeing stars on Hollywood Boulevard, one way or
another. On the Walk of Fame, you can scope out stars on the sidewalks dedicated to
famous celebrities. The TCL Chinese Theater courtyard holds the handprints of movie stars then and now. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will take you on a
trip through the greatest movies of all time. Attend a game show taping
or be in the audience of one of the local talk shows. Cap it all off with a bus
tour past the homes of the rich and famous.
11. For the Spooky Seeker: New Orleans
Some teens prefer the scarier side of life, so ghost hunting
in the French Quarter of New Orleans is spooktacular fun. LaLaurie Mansion and the
Bourbon Orleans Hotel are two famous and supposedly haunted houses. Brennan's serves
up Bananas Foster with an alleged ghost in the kitchen. There are several haunted walking
tours of the city, plus St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, the nation’s most haunted
cemetery.
