1. Deodorize couches, carpets and rugs
Keep your furniture and flooring smelling fresh by sprinkling baking soda on surfaces and letting it sit for at least 20 minutes. The baking soda will absorb the odors and then you can vacuum it all up for a clean scent.
2. Get rid of stubborn pet hair
Invest in a high-quality pet hair vacuum or lint roller to remove pet hair from floors and furniture. Go over areas twice if needed and vacuum in alternate directions to grab it all.
3. Clear the air
Pets shed dander, hair and skin cells which can all get trapped in your home's air filters. Be sure to change out your air filters and consider using air purifiers to improve air quality.
4. Scrub their bowls
Regularly wash pet food and water bowls with mild soap and hot water to prevent bacteria buildup. If they’ve developed any cracks, replace them with stainless steel or ceramic bowls since they don’t hold bacteria, keeping your pets healthy and safe.
5. Refresh their bed
Whether you use the washing machine or wash by hand in the tub, be sure to use a pet-friendly detergent and hot water to get rid of all the bacteria and allergens. Allow the bed and blankets to dry completely and if they are starting to look worn, consider replacing them.
6. Wash their collar and leash
It's easy to forget that a little collar can get dirty, but it can actually hold harmful germs if not cleaned regularly. Let the collar and leash soak in warm, soapy water for 15 minutes and let air dry. Now’s also a good time to check the quality of their gear and buy new ones.
7. Deep clean and organize their toys
Wash or sanitize your pet's toys regularly and discard any damaged or worn-out toys to prevent choking hazards. It might even be a great opportunity to take your furry friend to the pet specialty store to pick out a new toy.
8. Check your medicine cabinet
As you wrap up your spring cleaning around the house, ensure that your pet's medications, supplements and first-aid supplies are up-to-date and stored safely out of reach.
