1. Step Aerobics
Those plastic platforms that once dominated every inch of the gym floor are making their triumphant return, complete with enthusiastic counting arm movements, showing a 124 percent increase in popularity. Don’t be embarrassed if you get discombobulated about which foot goes where and when, only to end up stumbling over your step block. It happens to the best of us.
2. Parkour
Parkour — rebellious street movement turned suburban "foam obstacle" courses — is best for those looking to channel their inner Captain America. The point is to run, jump, roll or vault your way from one point to another as quickly as possible, preferably without a trip to the ER. If you really want to up your game, take a page out of Schmidt's playbook.
3. Jazzercise
Created in 1969, the dance cardio that had your mom sporting neon leotards and scrunchies is back. Perms are optional, enthusiasm is mandatory. It’s the OG workout and dance party rolled into one, minus the awkward “I’m not sure how to move my arms” phase.
4. Rollerblading
Gen X skated to Madonna at the rink while millennials rolled to Britney, and now all gens are lacing up again for outdoor "skate collectives" in parks nationwide. Nothing says "I'm reclaiming my youth" quite like dropping $300 on premium skates to recreate that $5 admission feeling from childhood. Except now there’s more fear of breaking a hip.
5. Tae Bo
The Billy Blanks kickboxing-meets-dancing phenomenon that sold millions of VHS tapes in the '90s is experiencing a YouTube revival. The mix of martial arts moves and dance still provides an excellent cardio workout, even if you're doing it ironically while wearing an authentic vintage "Tae Bo Certified" t-shirt you found on Etsy (we see you hipster hanger-on-ers).
6. Hula Hooping
No longer just a playground activity, hula hoops have evolved into legitimate fitness tools. Now, adults are using weighted hoops to strengthen their core, increase hip mobility and possibly rediscover their childhoods while trying not to hit themselves in the face, proving once again that adulthood is just childhood with a credit card.
7. Water Aerobics
Pool-based workouts are making a splash outside the retirement community with the younger crowd seeking joint-friendly, high-resistance training. Millennials who once made fun of their parents' pool noodle routines are now the ones posting Instagram stories of themselves doing underwater jumping jacks, showing us that we all eventually become our parents.
8. Primal Fitness/Quadrobics
Somewhere between CrossFit and your toddler's weird animal movements only they understand, lies the resurgence of primal fitness, where grown adults pay premium prices to crawl, hop and grunt their way to better health. Those who once scoffed at Richard Simmons now find themselves on all fours in $120 compression gear crawling across the floor like a crab.
