The History
The NHL Winter Classic made its debut on January 1, 2008, at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, New York. The Buffalo Sabres faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins (who won 2-1), marking the first-ever outdoor game in NHL history. It was such a huge hit that it quickly became an annual tradition and has become one of the biggest events on the NHL calendar.
The Venue
The Winter Classic takes your regular hockey game and cranks it up a notch by taking the party outdoors in iconic stadiums that usually host football, baseball or even soccer games. From Fenway Park in Boston to Michigan Stadium (aka the “Big House”) in Ann Arbor, the Winter Classic brings hockey to unexpected places, turning each venue into a one-of-a-kind spectacle.
This year's game will be held at Wrigley Field, the legendary home of the Chicago Cubs. If you’ve ever dreamed of watching hockey in a historic baseball park, this is your chance to check that off your bucket list.
Teams and Entertainment
Teams are often chosen based on rivalries or regional connections, with one team typically being from the host city. This year the Chicago Blackhawks are taking on the St. Louis Blues (hopefully not resulting in another St. Patrick’s Day Massacre).
The Winter Classic isn't your typical hockey game. It’s like the Super Bowl of hockey! Expect live music, pre-game festivities, fan zones and a celebration of hockey’s rich history and culture. It’s a full-blown party with a hockey game smack-dab in the middle of it.
This year, the Smashing Pumpkins, who were formed in Chicago, will be kicking off the pregame festivities and will also be part of the opening introductions of players. Chance The Rapper, who was born and raised in the city, will be taking the stage during the first intermission.
Setting the Stage
The NHL has released a sneak peek of how Wrigley Field will be transformed for the event. Working with Seattle-based Analog Heart, the NHL took inspiration from Chicago’s iconic architecture, its rivers and parks and, of course, Wrigley’s famous brick and ivy. Expect a visual feast for the eyes as the stadium is reimagined for the big game.
The Rink Red Carpet
One of the best parts of the Winter Classic is the special edition jerseys that pay tribute to the teams' heritage and the event’s unique outdoor setting.
The Blackhawks’ jersey is a nod to their rich history, with a classic lace-neck collar and a vintage cream color inspired by the Original Six era. The front crest features the stars from the Chicago flag, and the back numbers incorporate pinstripes, a tribute to the city’s baseball tradition.
The Blues’ jersey is equally fashionable, featuring a 1966 prototype design with a bold new Blue Note on the shoulder. Fleur-de-lis symbols on the neck and hem honor St. Louis’ French heritage, making this jersey a stylish tribute to the city.
