1. “Anora”
Anora, a sex worker from Brooklyn, meets her Prince Charming in the form of the son of a young Russian oligarch. After the two
elope, his parents are set on annulling the marriage. The buzz on this film is
big, with predicted nominations for Best Picture, Director,
Mikey Madison for Lead Actress, Yura Borisov for Supporting Actor and Editing, but it will likely take home the prize for Original Screenplay.
2. “The Brutalist”
Clocking in at over three hours, this mammoth-sized biopic
of Hungarian designer László Tóth is also a visual epic. Director Brady
Corbet is the frontrunner for his category and the film might also win Cinematography
and Original Score, but other nominations might include Lead Actor for Adrien
Brody, Supporting Actor for Guy Pearce, Original Screenplay and Production Design.
3. “A Complete Unknown”
Timothée Chalamet is earning rave reviews for his
turn as a young Bob Dylan, and the biopic just might nab him his first Oscar for
Lead Actor. Other likely nominations include Best Picture, Supporting
Actor for Edward Norton, Supporting Actress for Monica Barbaro, Adapted
Screenplay and Costume Design.
4. “Conclave”
The predicted frontrunner for Best Picture is this political
potboiler about the election for the next pope. Adapted Screenplay and Editing
are other likely wins for the film, but expect nominations for Best Director,
Lead Actor for Ralph Fiennes, a supporting nomination for Isabella
Rossellini, as well as nominations for Production Design, Cinematography, Costume
Design, Editing and Original Score.
5. “Emilia Pérez”
Zoe Saldaña plays a lawyer helping a Mexican cartel
leader transition to a woman, earning her rave reviews and making her the
current frontrunner for Supporting Actress. The musical crime comedy is
also expected to win for Original Song and International Feature,
but also net nominations for Best Picture, Director, Lead Actress
for Karla Sofía Gascón, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, Score and Makeup
and Hairstyling.
6. “Flow”
Dialogue-free and made in open-source software, this animated
feature about a cat making its way through a newly aquatic post-flood world is
so striking and compelling, it will probably win Animated Feature, as
well as International Feature, as it hails from Latvia.
7. “I’m Still Here”
This political biographical drama from Brazil will probably
be nominated for Best Picture and International Feature Film, but Fernanda
Torres might get a Lead Actress nomination for her role as a mother and
activist coping with the disappearance of her political dissident husband.
8. “The Last Showgirl”
Will Pamela Anderson get a surprise nomination for her
role as a middle-aged Vegas showgirl? As great as the reviews have been,
probably not, but Jamie Lee Curtis will probably snag a Supporting
Actress nomination as her best friend, Annette.
9. “A Real Pain”
Kieran Culkin will likely win a Supporting Actor Oscar
for playing the bristly but charismatic Benji, who travels to Poland with his
cousin (writer, director and lead Jesse Eisenberg) to see their family’s
homeland and the country’s Holocaust history. The charming road trip dramady
will likely get nominations for Best Picture and Original Screenplay, too.
10. “The Substance”
Demi Moore already won the Golden Globe for her turn as Elisabeth
Sparkle, an aging actress who turns to a black market drug to look younger, and
she’s now the frontrunner for the Lead Actress race, too. Other noms are
predicted for Best Picture, Original Screenplay and Makeup
and Hairstyling.
11. ‘Wicked”
"Wicked" was one of the biggest films of the year, and even
though it will probably earn nominations for Best Picture, Lead Actress and Supporting Actress for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, it’s really going
to shine as the frontrunner in categories like Production Design, Costume
Design, Makeup and Hairstyling and Sound. It will likely earn nominations
for Adapted Screenplay, Editing and Visual Effects, too.
12. “Dune: Part Two”
The sequel to the space drama remake, it will likely be the
frontrunner for Visual Effects, but it will probably also get nominations for Best
Picture, Director, Production Design, Cinematography, Makeup and Hairstyling and Sound.
13. “Sing Sing”
More of an underdog in the race, this prison drama about a
stage show program for incarcerated men stars Colman Domingo and Clarence
Maclin. Both are expected to get acting nominations, for Lead Actor and Supporting
Actor, respectively.
14. "Wild Robot"
Not only will this film about a robot on an uninhabited island
get a nomination for Animated Feature, but things look promising for it to
receive nominations for Original Score and Original Song.
