1. Book a spa day
Rarely do we take the time to really indulge in self-care. So while everyone else is wrangling their kids on and off the beach or stuck in holiday weekend traffic, you can park your butt in a massage chair or infrared sauna and literally feel your worries melt away. It's a great time of year to shed your stress and reset a little before the busy holiday season commences, and you have all the time in the world.
2. Play tourist in your own neighborhood
This is a no-brainer. Odds are you've never read the plaque on that monument in the park or visited that tiny museum just outside of town. Make it point to hit all the sights you normally avoid and really get to know your neighborhood!
3. Visit a national (or state) park
Did you know there are over 400 national parks in the United States? Not to mention the nearly 7,000 state parks. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you haven't managed to visit all of them yet. Labor Day weekend, that in-between time of not-quite-summer, not-quite-fall is the perfect time to reconnect with nature. Pick one out (or two or three, depending on how adventurous you're feeling) on a map and see what awaits you. Don't forget to pack a picnic!
4. Create a DIY home movie theater
With the onset of the streaming era, going to the movies is a lost art. But just because you'd rather watch a blockbuster film from the comfort of your own home doesn't mean it can't be an experience. Push the couches together, pull out every blanket you have and maybe string up a makeshift projector screen. Pop the popcorn, queue up your favorite comfort movies or rent the newest premieres, and dim the lights for a night of movie magic.
5. Have a hobby day
We're all so busy these days, there's hardly enough hours in the day to do the things we actually enjoy doing. But now, you have three empty days ahead of you with no work and no distractions — let's do the fun things! Catch up on your TBR, start that crochet project you've been putting off, book a fitness class or spend three hours cooking that over-the-top dinner recipe. We're investing in ourselves this weekend.
6. Listen to some live, local music
Let's be honest: We've all spent way too much money on concert tickets as of late. And while we'll never ever regret splurging on the Eras or Renaissance tours, there's likely a ton of smaller, local talent that you've been missing out on. Scour your local bulletins for the acts who make their living on small gigs at your corner coffee shop or downtown dive bar. You never know how impressed you'll be!
7. Romanticize your neighborhood
You know all about this "romanticizing" trend by now — making your everyday routine a little less mundane and a little more "treat yo' self." Odds are you spend most of your time hitting up the same cafes, retail stores and stoplights over and over again during your day-to-day life. Take this opportunity to find the special spots in your town, like the local theater production on Main Street or the gurgling creek along that hiking trail you never walk. When things are quieter and emptier, it's easier to find the finer things.
