This summer has been a wild one for grilling-themed frozen
treats. The season began with the Frenchsicle, a ketchup popsicle flavored with
tomatoes to taste like French’s iconic ketchup. Then, gourmet ice cream purveyor Van Leeuwen debuted their Grey Poupon mustard-flavored ice cream with salted pretzel, said to taste tangy
and sweet.
Now, we’re going where no frozen treat has gone before, as
Oscar Meyer is coming in hot with the Cold Dog.
Made in collaboration with Popbar, the treat allows hot dog
and popsicle fans alike to enjoy a smoky wiener-flavored ice pop with a swirl
of mustard. Available in pop-up locations on the East Coast, you also may be
able to snag one from the Weinermobile as part of Oscar Meyer’s “Stupid or
Genius” campaign.
But wait, there’s more: So Cute Ice Cream dropped ketchup and mustard flavored ice creams as well at the Canadian National Exhibition and the Social, not to be outdone has a Let the Dogs Out! Sundae, a toasted buttered bun ice cream base with chunks of caramelized
Nathan’s all-beef hot dogs.
Why are we suddenly so
obsessed with condiments and hot dogs in our ice cream? The simple answer is
that probably no one is hankering for a hunk of meat in a popsicle or the tang
of mustard in a sundae, but it does make for great photos and videos. In the TikTok and
Instagram world we live in, nothing seems more unique than outrageously
flavored foods. If you’re looking for attention online, you will definitely get
a reaction with one of these wacky desserts. You can try it, but you don’t have
to like it. We’re already predicting Pink Sauce Pops for 2023.
In the meantime, can we
get a “Heck Yeah” for chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream?
