2. Seal and laminate paper decorations
For decorations like greeting cards or paper snowflakes, take measures to waterproof them before displaying them. For instance, laminating the decorations will protect them from the elements. Alternatively, you can coat them with a clear acrylic spray sealant. Applying sealants on quilled designs and cardstock adornments will prevent colors from bleeding and running if the decor gets wet.
3. Apply protective coatings
Additionally, you can safeguard decorations made of wood, metal or fabric by applying a protective topcoat. Use a clear varnish or sealant on wood pieces to shield them from moisture and UV damage. For fabric decor, apply a water-repellent spray to prevent water stains and fading. Reapply these coatings periodically.

When decorating outdoors with lights, LED bulbs hold up better than standard incandescent bulbs. Moreover, verify any lighting you use outside is specifically rated for outdoor use. Inspecting each bulb and cord ensures the lights can withstand exposure to the sun, rain and snow.
5. Weight down inflatables
For inflatable decorations, securely anchor them so they do not blow away. Use sandbags, stakes or tethers to keep them firmly in place. Also, avoid positioning inflatables where they will be exposed to heavy winds.
6. Display delicate decor indoors
Pieces constructed of delicate mediums like glass or glitter are best showcased inside your home or in a covered area safe from precipitation. If these decorations happen to get wet, gently pat them dry with a towel to limit the damage.
7. Check attachments
Examine any ties, hooks, clamps and other fasteners to confirm that the decorations are securely mounted. Periodically, check connections to ensure nothing has come loose. Laying hands on each fastener or attachment and feeling for any looseness prevents decor from blowing around.
8. Timely removal
Avoid leaving decorations up for extended periods after the holidays. The longer they are exposed to rain, snow and sunlight, the more wear they will show. Soon after seasonal celebrations end, take down outdoor decor to keep it looking its best for years to come.
