1. Hair Oiling
This hair technique, rooted in Indian culture, is essential if hair growth is part of your hair goals journey or simply if you want healthier locks. Typically, a castor oil mixed in with a coconut oil or olive oil is coated all over the head from roots to ends and left overnight before washing it out the next morning. This process will strengthen your hair while promoting hair growth and add just a little more shine to dull hair.
2. Skip a Few Washes
Unless you have very fine hair, chances are you are shampooing way too much. Although each hair type calls for a different frequency of showering, which can be referenced here, many are guilty of over-washing, which dries hair out and can even make your hair thinner. So, whether you cut back to every other night, once a week or once a month (according to your individual hair type) you can drastically improve the appearance of your hair and its overall health by skipping some washes.
3. Regular Haircuts
Though it may almost seem counterintuitive to get regular haircuts if you are trying to grow your hair out, without this maintenance you actually slow down hair growth and make your split ends worse and more vulnerable to breakage. Cutting hair more frequently according to your individual needs will give your hair a more consistent shape, promote growth and improve the overall look of your strands.
4. Switch to Silk Pillowcases
Whether you purchase silk pillowcases or their less expensive twin, satin pillowcases, making the switch to a material that minimizes tugging won’t just improve your hair but your skin and overall health as well. The smooth texture of silk and satin pillowcases means less pulling of your hair to prevent frizziness and also absorbs less moisture than cotton, meaning your hair will retain more moisture overall. If you aren’t ready to make the switch to a whole set of pillowcases, consider getting a silk sleeping cap or bonnet instead to still get the hair benefits.
5. Get Your Nutrients In
You don’t need to completely change your entire diet to reap the hair benefits, but you should consider getting in some more nutrients. Eating more fish like salmon that contain omega 3 fatty acids will help your hair growth and also contribute to its fullness and other foods like berries and spinach are packed with vitamins C and E which are also vital for hair health. Though this is not an anti-cookie campaign, making some nutrition swaps can dramatically improve your hair.
6. Indulge in Some Hair Masks
A little extra self-care never hurt anyone and what better way to weave more in than some hair masks? Especially if you suffer from dry strands, a few masks here and there will significantly assist with locking in moisture and smoothing out split-ends. Plus, once you rinse and dry your hair, it will be all the more shiny and soft.
7. Turn Down The Heat
This last point applies to your shower water and heat products, but mostly the former. Although it feels deliciously good to shower in boiling hot water, it is doing damage to your precious locks. The hot water both weakens your hair over time and adds some agitation to the scalp, so the switch to lukewarm water, at least while you wash your hair, is for the best.
