1. Hydrate
Want to glow? It starts from within. First, you want to make sure you’re staying hydrated to help give your skin a healthy base to work from.
2. Exfoliate
To have truly dewy skin, you’ll need to get out with the old skin cells and in with the new.
“Dead skin cells can make your skin look dull and dry,” Dr. Asmi Sanghvi, an integrative dermatologist at PFRANKMD in New York City, told Dailybreak. “Exfoliating regularly can help remove dead skin cells and reveal brighter, smoother skin.”
3. Choose the Right Moisturizer
Moisturizer is an important step to dewy skin, but what option is best for locking in hydration and boosting skin’s glow?
“The most important thing to remember is looking for moisturizers that contain humectants like panthenol or dimethicone to help attract water into the skin and stop it from evaporating,” explained Joelle O’Connor, licensed esthetician at Schweiger Dermatology Group in Hackensack, New Jersey. “Moisturizers that contain niacinamide can also help to increase blood flow and circulation to the cells, leading to a more refreshed appearance.”
4. Don’t Fear Face Oils
Face oils often have a bad reputation for clogging pores and causing breakouts. But the right face oil can actually lock in moisture and restore a natural glow, which will only make your dewy makeup application shine even more, in all the best ways. So how do you find the right face oil?
“Face oils can provide an extra boost of hydration and help give your skin a dewy glow. Look for a lightweight, fast-absorbing oil like rosehip or jojoba,” Dr. Sanghvi suggested.

5. Treat Yourself (to Professional Treatments)
While you should spend time at home to establish a consistent skincare routine, an occasional trip for a facial or other professional treatment will also allow your skin to serve as a healthy foundation for your makeup products.
“As a dermatologist who recently collaborated with New York Fashion Week, I understand that radiant skin requires commitment and a multi-pronged approach, much like exercise and diet. Now is the perfect time to work towards your summer glow using face masks, professional facials, and skincare ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, and nourishing peptides,” advised Dr. Dusan Sajic, an international board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist, founder of Sajic Skin Science, and director of the Derma Skin Institute. “For damaged skin, treatments like microneedling or lasers can help put your skin in that radiant dewy condition sooner.”
6. Soak in SPF
To protect your glowing, hydrated skin, make sure to apply SPF daily before adding makeup. Otherwise, your skin is vulnerable to uncomfortable and even dangerous sun damage, from an irritating sunburn to an increased risk of skin cancer.
7. Add Face Primer
Before you apply foundation, bronzer and other makeup, make sure to add a primer to hold everything in place. Rather than a mattifying primer, which is designed to minimize shine, look for options that are luminizers to better improve the overall glow.
“When it comes to makeup, you want to choose formulations that say ‘luminous’ or ‘dewy’. These formulations are not matte, meaning they will not have a more powdery texture,” O’Connor explained.
8. Stick to Creams Over Powders
To achieve that highly luminous look trending this spring, swap out your go-to powder makeup products, like foundation, blush and bronzer, for creamy formulas instead. These types of products offer better light reflection.
9. Apply Liquid Highlighter
Now, for the highlight of this makeup trend: highlighter! Once you have a hydrated, moisturized and sun-protected base, highlighter will only amplify the natural glow you’ve established. While powder highlighters will add plenty of shine, go for a liquid highlighter instead for a seamless glow.
10. Wear Lip Balm or Gloss
Don’t forget your lips! Add a moisturizing lip balm or give your face even more shine with a luscious gloss to complete the dewy look.
11. Finish With Face Mist
For that last hit of hydration, spray a setting spray or soothing face mist all over. You can also carry your mist with you and give yourself little boosts of refreshing hydration throughout the day.
When choosing a face mist, Dr. Sanghvi recommended products containing aloe vera or hyaluronic acid for the best glowy results.
