Remember last year when cocoa bombs were the “thing?”
Chocolate shells filled with cocoa mix, marshmallows and sprinkles took over
Pintrest and craft stores. When you’ve had your fill of hot cocoa bombs, reuse
those molds for the next level in beverages -- cocktail bombs.
There are several different ways to go about it. First,
there’s a frozen juice bomb. You can freeze juice and drop it into a fizzy
drink, like Prosecco, for a bath bomb-like reaction.
As for combinations, think orange juice for
the Prosecco or grapefruit juice in a tequila soda. All you need is a
spherical ice cube mold and it's bombs away. This is a mixologist's dream, but
you don't need an advanced bartending course to try this at home. You can get creative by mixing and matching different liquors and different
types of fruit juices. Can your go-to cocktail mixer be frozen for a new twist
on your favorite drink?
Then, there’s another
approach. Tastemade has a recipe for Aperol Spritz bombs that are reminiscent
of a bath bomb. Containing a bit of baking soda, the powder-based bombs fizz
and dissolve in a drink. This recipe could be adapted for lots of different
flavors beyond just orange. Perhaps a little Kool-Aid or Crystal Lite powder
can be classed up in some sparkling wine? How about mint-lime balls in some
soda and rum for an instant mojito?
If all else fails, you can buy ready-made drink bombs as
well. My Drink Bomb has flavors from Pineapple Guava to Cherry Blossom, while Cocktail Bomb Shop has
flavors like Raspberry Orange and Pina Colada. Some bombs have bits of edible
glitter for an extra special sipper, while others have edible flowers bits and
swirls. A garnish with ice and fresh fruit gives a professional presentation.
One other thing to note about these drinks mixers -- most are
non-alcoholic. You add the booze in yourself. So, you can serve up a Blue
Raspberry Bomb with seltzer to your kids instead of soda and juice. Plus, you
can keep some on hand for teetotaler guests who would like a fun refreshment.
Whatever the case, your drink bombs don’t need to be limited
to cocoa anymore. Whip up or buy a batch of your favorites and you’ll have quick
drinks ready to go.
