You might have heard a lot about Chat GPT lately. It’s an Open AI chatbot
that you can ask pretty much anything. It gets its intelligence from anything from
Wikipedia to medical journals and you can speak to it conversationally to get a
wide range of information back. From travel advice to form letters, there’s
a lot of potential for this AI. But can it cook?
It turns out, Chat GPT is pretty skilled in the kitchen too.
Not only can you ask it simple requests like what you should have for dinner tonight,
but you can even give it specific parameters like asking for an easy, gluten-free seafood recipe that kids will love.
I asked Chat GPT to give me a recipe with just that and it
gave me a Gluten-Free Coconut Shrimp recipe that I’m pretty sure my kids would
like. And if you read the recipe, it doesn’t appear to be total nonsense (like
AI generated artwork sometimes is) but instead a solid recipe. At least we hope.
Its actual source is unknown since Chat GPT doesn’t give up sources, so it’s hard to tell if this is something it generated or it just lifted verbatim from another website. The latter scenario is problematic if it’s taking
information from other creators without credit. Also, it’s obviously not a reliable
place to turn to for complex dietary advice if you're not even sure where it's getting its info. But, as a jumping-off point, it's fascinating. Chat GPT opens up a world of potential for future
AI-generated recipes and the future of cooking.
Another thing that’s interesting about Chat GPT is that
you can get absolutely wild with it. I asked for a recipe for banana, tuna, and
kale muffins and boy, did it shoot one right out for me. Yes, disgusting, but
also incredible that it was able to respond so quickly and without hesitation for my lack of taste. It also remembered to make it gluten-free, based on my last request.
As the AI gets smarter though, the potential for recipe development becomes greater. Imagine listing the ingredients you have in your fridge and
seeing what Chat GBT can come up with. You could theoretically create custom recipes based on your unique preferences, what you have on hand and how much you want to spend.
For now, Chat GPT does incredibly well with recipe requests, despite still being in its testing phase. It's all for fun
right now, but it is amazing to play with. What can you and it figure out together
for dinner? Just remember to take it with a grain of salt, or maybe more.
