1. Catch the sunlight while it’s out
With the sun setting earlier and earlier, it’s even more important to get a dose of that sweet Vitamin D while you have the chance. Consider popping out for a quick walk during your lunch break at work, or even just standing outside for a few minutes each morning to soak in the sunlight. A little bit can go a long way in days of darkness!
2. Get your movement in
It’s no secret that exercise gives you endorphins, and that all the people who say regular workouts help you feel better aren’t lying. Make sure to prioritize movement even when the sunlight is limited, whether that’s by taking a chilly run outside or having a nice indoor workout like a gym session or hot yoga class. You’ll be surprised at the difference movement can make on your mood!
3. Fill up your social calendar
Spending time with friends is one of the best ways to feel better no matter the season, but it becomes even more important to make intentional plans when you’re feeling the winter woes. Try to get plans with your besties on the calendar a couple times a week: bonus points if those plans involve getting outside.
4. Explore a new winter hobby
Try to look on the bright side (no pun intended); the colder months can be a great time to embrace a fun new indoor hobby. If you’re going to spend more time curled up on your couch, why not do so while crocheting, reading, writing or whatever else your brain can dream up? Having something to focus on will keep you busy and give you something to look forward to even when it’s dark out.
5. Lean into the cozy season
While an early sunset might not be ideal, this time of year is a great time to embrace a cozier lifestyle. Consider picking up a soft new blanket, some fluffy pillows or some warm mood lighting to make the indoor space where you’ll be spending time even more inviting. Get a candle going, pop some cookies in the oven and try to lean into an era of relaxation!
6. Invest in a HappyLight®
Have you heard of the HappyLight®? It’s a light therapy lamp meant to mimic the sunlight, perfect for days when you’re feeling the sun’s absence. Set up a HappyLight® at your work station or next to you on the couch so you can still gift your body the benefits of sunlight and improve your mood.
7. Cook up your comfort foods
Is there anything better than a warm meal on a cold, dreary day? Give yourself a delicious dinner to look forward to after the sun goes down, whether that’s a giant pot of soup, a comforting bowl of mac and cheese or whatever meal your body is craving at the end of the day. Maybe you’ll even make a warm beverage to go along with it.
8. Get good sleep
If you’re feeling tired earlier in the evening because of the extended darkness, consider leaning into that! It might not be a bad idea to get some extra shut-eye; more sleep can help improve your mood and overall energy levels on a day-to-day basis. An improved sleep and bedtime routine can only help you!
