Thanks to all those organizing videos on TikTok, many of our
fridges are looking better than they ever have. Raise your hand if you’ve bought
acrylic bins to hold your yogurt tubs or if you’ve ever decanted drinks into
more aesthetically-pleasing containers! We think this trend might be going too far, though, as fridges on TikTok have gone from decluttered to works of art.
A user who goes by the handle GardenofEVE on TikTok has been showing
off her fridge and it’s so extra, people are getting mad. In this clip, GardenofEVE
builds her fridge interior from the ground up, first cleaning it out and then
adorning it with baby’s breath flowers and eucalyptus leaves. She adds some
veggies, yogurt and beer (all fine), as well as several bottles of premium Voss
bottled water.
The final touches that were too much were a framed photo of her cat, what looks like
some kind of oil urn, six eggs in a ceramic tray and six corked glass
vials holding vitamins. It's completely ridiculous at best and more arts and
crafts than weeknight dinner.
The comments section for the video includes remarks like “You absolutely cannot make
a meal out of anything in there” and “So we out here decorating the inside of
our fridge now?”
Gardenof_eve didn’t stop there though. She has since done
seasonal updates to her fridge like a Valentine’s fridge with roses and a red heart-shaped
box of chocolate, as well as a gold and red themed fridge with a full bouquet, a matching wine bottle and produce only in those colors. To the angry comments about what she could
possibly make, she points out she could make an omelet with the eggs and a salad,
just to name a few things. Why she keeps toxic eucalyptus near her food, dried pasta
in the fridge at all or a framed picture of her cat on the shelf, we don’t know.
Gardenof_eve isn’t the only one staging her fridge for the
views. Creator and interior designer Claire Sullivan has gone so over-the-top, she puts her drinks in rattan baskets inside her fridge, which will
likely mold any day now thanks to cold moisture. She also adds canvas hanging
shelves (also a mold magnet), a picnic basket for leftovers (yep, mold time) and sometimes shops in a monochromatic color
palette. It’s giving French market still life, not a functional place to store
food.
How did we get here exactly? Was it Kris Kardashian's green produce -only fridge? Was it content creator Joshuela, who fills his videos with dramatic lighting and opera music to go along with
his potted herbs and fully decorated cakes? We don't know how we got here exactly, but we want out.
We’re going to sit this round out and keep our fridges neat,
organized and as stocked with edible things as much as possible because that is ambitious enough. Let’s hear it
for the #ActuallyCookWhatYouShopped challenge of 2023?
